Can you circumvent reward penalties?

When you run end game content, such as Abyss Dungeons and Raids, their rewards are only fully accessible until you hit specific gear score thresholds. Is there a way that enables you to circumvent that penalty, e.g. by equipping a low gear score set on a character that already surpasses the threshold?
