In the early 1970s, Steve Reich, one of the original minimal music composers, visited Africa. This beautiful continent left a deep impression on him and fuelled him with inspiration for one of his most famous and exciting early works: Drumming. It starts quietly - four bongos telling a story with a single rhythmic pattern - and develops into a monumental, swinging, colourful ensemble piece.
Drumming is a favourite of Slagwerk Den Haag. The piece, or an excerpt thereof, is regularly included in their repertoire.
